Top ten things not to miss in Recanati - Part II
Let's continue our journey discovering the town of Recanati and talking about the next five places not to be missed.
6. PERSIANI THEATRE AND BENIAMINO GIGLI MUSEUM
The elegant theatre of Recanati, commissioned by Monaldo Leopardi, is dedicated to the composer Giuseppe Persiani, born himself in Recanati. Inside, at the level of the third order of balconies, more precisely in the Sala dei Trenta (The Room of the Thirty), there is the Museum Beniamino Gigli, a small jewel dedicated to the great tenor of Recanati famous all over the world. Among the unforgettable songs written for him we must mention the famous Mamma (Mother).
Giacomo Leopardi square is located in the earth of Recanati. It's dominated by the statue dedicated to the poet, who is remembered with an absorbed and thoughtful look. Next to the statue you can admire the Torre del Borgo, mentioned in some verses of Le Ricordanze (The Remembrance): it houses the Museum dedicated to the town of Recanati (MUREC). From the top of tower you will get the most beautiful view of all the Marche region, from the Sibillini Mountains to the Monte Conero. The Torre del Borgo is the end of a special guided tour, "A Sunday in Recanati on the footsteps of Giacomo Leopardi", a very suggestive tour (Italian speaking tour) with a tourist guide through the spots of Leopardi. In the background of the square stands out the majestic Town Hall, neoclassical and characterized by two side wings: it was inaugurated in 1898 on the occasion of the first centenary of the birth of the illustrious poet.
Another important symbol of the city is the Cathedral of San Flaviano, dedicated to the Co-Patron of Recanati (the Patron Saint is San Vito). Once you get inside, you can admire the beautiful decorated coffered ceiling, dating back to 1620: in the centre is depicted San Flaviano himself in relief. Worthy of note is also the San Vincenzo Ferrer, by Lorenzo Lotto, before exhibited in the Church of San Domenico and now preserved here. The Cathedral also houses the remains of Pope Gregory XII, the last Pope buried outside Rome, who, after renouncing the papacy, retired to Recanati.

10. VILLA COLLOREDO MELS CIVIC MUSEUM, MUSEUM OF THE EMIGRATION OF PEOPLE FROM THE MARCHE REGION (MEMA) AND VILLA COLLOREDO MELS PARK
Villa Colloredo Mels is the imposing noble villa that takes its name from the Friulian family of landowners, the Colloredo Mels, who settled in the Marche region in 1600. It has been the seat of the Civic Museums since 1998. The sixteenth-century staircase and eighteenth-century paintings enrich the structure where are kept absolute masterpieces: four of the most beautiful works by the Renaissance master Lorenzo Lotto (among which stands the famous Annunciation), a section entirely dedicated to Giacomo Leopardi, the Golden Bull of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. Villa Colloredo Mels also houses the impressive Museo dell'Emigrazione Marchigiana –MEMA-( Museum of the Emigration of people from the Marche region), a multimedia and interactive museum dedicated to the countless people who abandoned their homeland in search of luck between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900.
The visit to the villa ends with the civic art gallery, the archaeological section, the historical and the modern section. You can visit the entire network of the Civic Museums in Recanati (Villa Colloredo, Torre del Borgo, Museo Beniamino Gigli) with a combined ticket. Moreover, next to the Villa, there's the Park of Villa Colloredo Mels, a public park where you can enter for free; it dates back to the mid-1800s and houses the CEA WWF, an environmental education centre with educational purposes.
